When Silence Is Misread: Reclaiming the Quiet Corners of Creativity

Sometimes silence is mistaken for absence. Recently, I was quietly removed from a writing group without warning—despite still being present in my own way. In this post, I explore the misunderstood power of creative pauses, reclaim my voice, and remind fellow creators that silence does not diminish our worth or belonging.

They mistook my silence for absence.
But I was always here—
Gathering strength,
Holding truth.
Silhouette of a woman walking alone toward light – symbolizing reclaiming personal space

They mistook my silence for absence.
But I was always here—
Gathering strength,
Holding truth.

The Unannounced Exit

Recently, I discovered I had been quietly removed from a writing group I once contributed to.
No message. No warning. Just—gone.

It might sound trivial. But the feeling wasn’t. I hadn’t left—I had simply gone quiet. And yet, my stillness was interpreted as disengagement.

What lingered was not anger, but a strange ache.
Because I was still there—just not loud.

The Creative Pause Isn’t Absence

Writers know the power of silence.

Sometimes, we go quiet to breathe. To observe. To gather the next wave of expression. Creativity doesn’t always happen in public view. Not every paragraph we write gets posted, and not every phase of our journey needs an announcement.

But in many spaces, silence is mistaken for disinterest.
Absence is assumed.
Doors are closed.

And we’re left to wonder if the room we helped build ever truly had space for us.

Reclaiming My Voice, My Space

This post isn’t to point fingers.
It’s to reclaim presence.

To say—even in pause, I was still here.
And to remind anyone reading this:

You do not need to prove your passion with performance.
You don’t need to be loud to be valid.
You don’t owe constant visibility to anyone.

You are allowed to be both quiet and worthy.

A Note to Fellow Creators

If you’ve ever been quietly removed, pushed aside, or forgotten just because you weren’t “active”—this is for you.

You still belong.
Your words still count.
Your presence, even in stillness, is powerful.

Let them remove you.
But never remove yourself from your truth.
