Recently I got myself enrolled for a walking challenge to achieve severe results about my weight loss and get a healthy habit of walking for long term benefits. Within a week, it left me thinking with numerous questions unanswered.
How many of us live a healthy lifestyle in today’s reality, where things and work are getting easier to do with the help of advanced technologies and machines. We use elevators and lifts instead of stairs. Washing machines and vacuums have taken away the physical work we used to do before. Cooking has become effortless with mixer grinder, dough and roti makers. Reasons for obesity and other health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid and many more are due to more minor physical exercises and a more relaxed lifestyle. Now what we do in the gym for an hour with various exercises like weight lifting, body bump, elliptical, treadmill all can be done at home just bringing a slight change in our lifestyle maintaining a regime for walking an hour a day. Start using stairs, forgetting we have lifts around.
Before two decades, indeed, we never had gyms in demand. But, now the present situation narrates its own story for awareness of fitness and also use of vehicles like bikes, scooters, cars and many more, immensely preferred rather than a bicycle or walking.
There are so many events, activities happening these days like yoga, outdoor exercises, fitness challenges, special promotions for walking events to create awareness for fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Our body is our permanent home till we are alive. So we should love it, take care of it. Many people who participate in such events positively agree.
As we live in a competitive world, I wonder if people really participate in such challenges, understanding that it’s for ourselves and not to win or compete with others. Competitions are healthy, no doubt, but many a time’s main aims for participation is lost and forgotten. We shouldn’t be doing it for the sake of 1st prize and gifts only. It is basically to learn to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It is to help one form a good habit and routine. Set a target for a daily basis and try to accomplish that. Break your own records and not of others for others.
I witnessed in the walking challenge that people were in the race to defeat one other. The step’s targets before signing off for the day are set so that other people can’t beat it. Daily, an unbeatable target is set for all who are participating. Many started to get demotivated, thinking this was unachievable and we couldn’t do it. No one was willing to hold hands and do it as teamwork, inspiring each other to go to the finish line or achieve the monthly target. What I saw was all age groups had participated. And rather than boosting the elderly, youngsters are in different mindsets of competition.

‘Struggling against thoughts is what causes stress’. Walking helps to destress the mind. A healthy walk daily for around 30 to 45 minutes can take u a long way, filling you up with positivity, making the immune system strong, helping build stamina. Aspire yourself to become an aspiration for others. Leave the competition, do it for yourself, and see the change you get with a lifetime experience.
